Love is all you need…

26 Jan

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, we are bombarded by images of happy loving couples celebrating their love on the one day where you’re contractually obligated to be lovey dovey. I myself have never had a real valentine (aside from my dad, who would be thrilled if he were my only valentine forever) and have always regarded Valentine’s Day as something to sleep through or spend in a drunken stupor. I hate the emphasis our society puts on being with someone else. What happened to being independent? Every year when Valentine’s Day rolls around millions of women feel like freaks or social pariahs when they find themselves perched on the couch alone with their two friends Ben & Jerry. Being single shouldn’t be something that is bemoaned. Sometimes we forget, but there are more important things in life than having a boyfriend or girlfriend.

Love is everywhere, I don’t need a boyfriend to know that I have love.

My lack of a valentine doesn’t mean I am not loved, quite the contrary, I have plenty of love from my family and friends. They’re the ones who have kept me going since graduation turned my life upside down. As hard as I try not to, sometimes I forget how great my friends and family are. No matter what, when I need my support system they are there. I can’t even begin to put into words how much I love each and every one of them. I can’t imagine my life without my friends. So this Valentine’s Day, instead of being bitter about my lack of a significant other I will instead bask in the glow of the love that is all around me, the love of friends and family.

“True friends are those who really know you but love you anyway.”

Thank you for really knowing me and loving me anyway ❤
